I know this has been a mystery and one that culd have had horrendous consequences for the nation if a national emergency arose while the Secretary of Defense, The Joint Chiefs and The President weren't told Mr. Austin would be out of contact with the rest of government for several days.
The question that being debated was and is, why wouldn't he tell others what he was doing, especially the president. Let alone as well all of the heads of the military, The Joint Chiefs were also in the dark!
(As I mentioned previously here, the Secretary of Defense was having surgery for reasons he didn't anyone to know about until he was ready to come out and explain in person was his intent!?)
