This makes a lot of sense in that this guy is not your average White House resident, this guy was part of the inner loop where the real power resided. Even though it does appear to be extreme in his method for escape, there are few options that are open to someone like him.
Running away wasn't one of his options as he was surrounded by Secret Service people, which meant he had to take advantage of his best avenue for getting out of the gate and into the real world!
