Between 2010 and 2013, nearly a million people migrated to Texas, Florida, the Carolinas and Colorado, reports Stateline.
  • 1.2 million Americans left the Northeast and the Midwest for the South and West in just three years, from 2010 to 2013.
  • New York, Illinois, California, New Jersey and Michigan have lost almost a million residents to interstate moves.
  • North Carolina and Texas are popular destinations for interstate movers. Additionally, they each have a high percentage of residents who are born and remain in the states.
  • Over the last 10 years, the number of people moving to Texas has quadrupled. Texas' top-gaining cities include Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Fort Worth and Dallas.
  • Other states with booming economies based on oil and gas, such as Montana and North Dakota, have also become popular destinations. In one decade, North Dakota turned a net loss of residents into a gain.
Movers cite employment as the most common reason for their moves.
