It's understood that when you grow older accepting the next generations new and perhaps bolder approach to their job presents the old crew with new problems associated with command and compliance.
The new members of the crew have different habits and standards of behavior and for living their life as such that requires them to use different tools for advancement in the new group and for self enhancement while taking entertainment to new levels.
The captain is witness to much of the new thinking where the next generation believes more in self fulfilment then sacrificing themselves for the larger good.
Captain James T. Kirk, of the Starship Enterprise, is not the first to feel the pinch of being behaviorally marginalized, and of course not the last to have to make changes to accommodate the new generation coming on board his or any vessel in the future.
