When there isn't any pride in a job well done, only the demand that you obey the rules others have set done for you. And yet there is the notion that the state is so large and distant you can do what you want without any self awareness to prove who you are and what is your place in society.
You have no passed or future. Only today!
When you don't have any connection the the larger society other then being one of billions, who cares what can be defined as taking pride in a job well done? Every body you know is the same way, you and they are nothing but a number, if even that, lost in horde of other numbers.
And the ruling class that live the good life is the same way, all doing what it takes to obey to find some place where numbers don't count for humanity and consequences are irrivlent.
