Combating Welfare Fraud in Minnesota
Dear Friend,
As a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, I am committed to serious oversight and to keeping the public fully informed about the alarming failures that allowed widespread fraud and abuse of taxpayer-funded welfare programs in Minnesota.
Recently, federal investigators, inspectors general, and investigative journalists have uncovered some of the largest welfare fraud schemes in modern history, originating in Minnesota. These schemes diverted billions of taxpayer dollars from programs meant to support vulnerable populations, including childcare assistance, autism services, and housing aid. Instead of reaching families in need, funds were siphoned off by bad actors exploiting weak controls, lax oversight, and a culture of indifference within state agencies. Equally concerning are credible allegations that statewide officials ignored repeated warnings, failed to act on clear red flags, and in some cases discouraged or intimidated whistleblowers who tried to report misconduct under Tim Walz’s policies. These were not isolated errors, but systemic failures that allowed fraud to continue for years at the expense of taxpayers.
As your member of Congress, I remain firmly dedicated to fiscal responsibility and a sound budget. Taxpayer dollars must be spent as Congress intended, and government officials at every level have a duty to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse.
On January 7, 2026, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing to examine these failures and the misconduct surrounding Minnesota’s administration of federal programs. During that hearing, I questioned witnesses to shed light on the scope of the misconduct and the failure of state officials to address serious and well-documented concerns. This investigation remains ongoing, and I will continue working to ensure that those responsible are held accountable and that federal programs serve the people they were designed to help, not those seeking to exploit them.
