Economic Growth Debated : Progressives Maneuver Information

Update from the National Center for Policy Analysis on how our economy is going no where.

Economic growth. Instead of supporting policies that would actually create jobs, increase wages, and grow the economy (like approving the Keystone pipeline), the President and Senate have been busy this week proposing dubious ideas that pander to political constituencies rather than anything grounded in solid economic principles.

The President issued an executive order this week ordering federal contractors to include sex and racial breakdowns in their disclosures of employee compensation. The President also prohibited federal contractors from retaliating against workers who discuss their pay with one another. The President's goal is to force employers to decrease the gap between what their female and male employees earn. Ironically, women who work for President Obama only make 88 cents for every dollar that a male White House staffer makes.

For their part, the Senate spent this week debating legislation that would promote equal pay by collecting pay information from employers and creating new regulations to govern how employers interact with their employees. The effort fell short of the 60 votes needed to end a Republican filibuster. The actions are an effort to increase female voter turnout in the midterm elections. The minimum wage bill, which would raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, was scheduled to come up this week in the Senate, but it is now scheduled to come up after the two-week Congressional recess. maneuver
