Just read a great article by Dr. Margaret Mead called " The price we pay for Democracy" - It's details the trials and tribulations that accompany the demand for equal treatment under the law, and the real meaning of tolerance for the rights of all individuals in a democracy.
There are so many different opinions that come into play in a democracy and all have some legitimacy even though many may disagree with those opinions, even so, everyone must respect those opinions. Of course sometimes conflict arises between individuals that voice their opinions forcefully and in public and must be settled under the law.
This is just snap shot of the article that goes into how all of us that live in a democracy have to understand that it is difficult to comply with the demands under a real democracy. Anything that is worth saving is difficult. All of us must do the heavy lifting to make it work, all of us.
If you have an occasion to read the entire article by Dr. Margaret Mead, a renowned anthropologist, you will find it very rewarding seeing it was written while she was at the Museum of Natural History in New York and her article appeared in Red Book, VOL. 119 NO 4, 1962.
So much has changed since 1962, and yet so little. She understood her environment and saw the dangers of compliancy that would destroy freedom and democracy.
