Sometimes it takes a long time to come to the realization you have been found out as a fake, but when it happens, you must be ready to adjust your plans. And as with most intellectuals, they don't have a plan to change their theories without sufficient investigation and brilliant debate with fellow intellectuals.
In this case, of course, what was needed was having a quick wit and being fleet of foot to make the original plan a debatable topic in future contracts.
Sadly though, as with most intellectuals, especially university types, are not on board with making adjustments on the fly with their lifelong thinking and ideology! Goodness, having to admit their whole 'life's work was bullshit would be too much to endure.
Maybe this way was best! Having to lie to his fellow smarties would be way to stressful!
