Okay you can laugh at this but in many cases, it was true! No buses or paved roads or sidewalks or anything else to make the trip to school easier. Back then it was called ''character building'', not hardship.
My goodness, today the kids have a cake walk. No really, it was tough to just get to school. In the winter we froze getting there and then we froze in school because the furnaces were not working most of the time. There was never enough wood to last the day!!!
Yikes!
