This Week’s Media Take — “The CIA Democrats” Drive the Impeachment Bus

You’ve seen the headlines about impeachment proceedings against President Trump. You’ve probably not seen how the hand of the so-called “Deep State” made it happen.

The “Deep State” is not some sort of conspiracy theory, by the way. Nor is it an invention of Donald Trump. It’s a shorthand name for the permanent bureaucracy that inhabits the D.C. swamp, especially in the realm of intelligence and national security. Former Congressional aide Mike Lofgren used the term in a 2011 essay at the Truthout website and expanded on it in his 2016 book, The Deep State: The Fall of the Constitution and the Rise of a Shadow Government.

Anyway, the impeachment bus has been slow-moving — until now. Democrats have latched onto “Ukraine-gate” in the expectation it will catch on in a way Russiagate never did. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, reluctant for most of this year to pursue impeachment, is now “all in.”

Gerald Seib, executive Washington editor at The Wall Street Journal, says everything changed less than 72 hours ago.

The dam of resistance to impeachment appeared to break fully and finally Monday night with the online publication of an op-ed in the Washington Post by seven House Democratic freshman members calling for an impeachment process to begin. All seven of the authors formerly served in the military or national-security agencies. All are political moderates. All come from swing districts; indeed, Mr. Trump won the vote in four of the seven districts in the 2016 presidential campaign. [Emphasis mine]

This group of seven freshman congress members belongs to a group that writer Patrick Martin labels “the CIA Democrats.”

Martin first noticed this group coming up through the ranks during primary season in 2018.

In a thoroughly-researched series of articles for the World Socialist Web Site — you never know where you’ll find quality news analysis! — Martin noticed an unusually high number of Democrats with military or intelligence backgrounds running for the U.S. House in competitive districts.

By his count, such candidates ran in 46 toss-up districts. Thirty of them won their primary contests. Eleven of them won in the general election that gave Democrats control of the House. And seven signed their names to the Washington Post Op-Ed on Monday — a critical mass without which impeachment would still be a topic confined to the Democratic Party’s fringes.

Martin is scrupulous about not jumping to conclusions. Nowhere does he allege the “Deep State” purposely orchestrated a campaign of ex-spooks and soldiers pursuing House seats in swing districts with an eye toward impeachment. But the phenomenon is nonetheless striking, as he wrote in a follow-up article after the November election.

The influx of new members of Congress with recent experience in the CIA or military or civilian national security positions is unprecedented for the Democratic Party in the more than four decades since the Vietnam War era. The 11 include seven military veterans, all but one an officer—two each from the Army, Navy and Marines, one from the Air Force—two former CIA agents, and two who worked as civilian decision-makers in the State Department and National Security Council.

Five of the 11 are women, including the two who are ex-CIA. Both of them — Michigan’s Elissa Slotkin and Virginia’s Abigail Spanberger — signed the Op-Ed. Both have been revered in Big Media articles as the “badass women” of the freshman class.

These Deep State insiders don’t get as much press as “the Squad” — the hard-left faction led by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — but they’re the ones exercising outsized influence as the D.C. swamp careens toward impeachment.

How ‘Medicare for All’ Could Block Medical Progress

The introduction of penicillin in the 1940s was a revolution in medicine. Within a decade of its widespread use, however, bacteria began to develop resistance to the drug.

Since then, pharmacologists have been waging an ongoing battle to overcome infectious microbes’ resistance to lifesaving drugs. The Democrats’ insistence on single-payer health care and demonization of pharmaceutical companies may kneecap these efforts.

For example, researchers are growing more alarmed that microbes will begin adapting more quickly than pharmaceutical developments, such as in the case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

This is a disastrous possibility, and it would become even more plausible by destroying the profit motive that drives the industry to create new antibiotics.

In several tweets, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., hinted that this is exactly his aim. He complains that the “drugmakers make huge profits off medication developed with taxpayer-funded research.”

In reality, most of the funds in medical research come out of those drugmakers’ revenues.

In 2017, the United States spent $182.3 billion in medical research, but less than $40 billion of that was federal spending. In fact, the largest portion of medical R&D dollars came from industry investment totaling $121.8 billion.

In Sanders’ signature “Medicare for All” bill, drug prices would be essentially set by the secretary of health and human services. Once Medicare for All empowers the secretary to decide the appropriate revenue for a drug company, what will happen to that $121 billion of research investment?

Fortunately, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the current administration shows a different path in a final rule issued early in August.

The rule introduces add-on payment pathways for newly developed antibiotics that are designated “qualified infectious disease products” by the Food and Drug Administration.

To incentivize private drug development, this designation is granted by the FDA and reserved for new antibiotics to treat infections from new or drug-resistant pathogens.

In general, new drugs are granted periods of exclusivity by the FDA that are separate from patent protections, lasting from three to seven years depending on the drug. A “qualified infectious disease products” designation would extend this period by an additional five years.

In addition to offering greater protections for new drugs, the rule also increases the add-on payment from 50% of costs to 75% for qualified infectious disease products, and it considers them new products rather than improved products, which would eliminate the need to show “substantial clinical improvement” over an existing drug.

The criteria for substantial clinical improvement were vague and unclear, so forgoing this requirement significantly lowers the bar for introducing new antibiotics.

Rather than imposing strict regulations from a federal office onto firms and how they operate their businesses, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is leveraging the substantial medical and pharmaceutical industry to tackle an impending health crisis.

Drug-resistant strains of bacteria infect over 2 million people each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and over 20,000 of them ultimately succumb to those infections.

Because of the difficulty in eradicating the bacteria and the potential toxicity of the treatment involved, hospital stays that are complicated by drug-resistant organisms are often prolonged and costlier, adding up to $20 billion in health care costs annually.

Thus, the availability of new and effective drugs is crucial to both the future health and future health costs of America.

Government spending, where appropriate, should be directed at enabling private industry to innovate solutions, particularly one so pressing as multi-drug resistance. In this case, pharmaceutical companies will have access to add-on payment incentives if they develop and introduce new drugs.

The single-payer vision, which sees the government as capable of being the solution, would slash pharmaceutical revenues in pursuit of controlling prices. Presumably the government share of research and development, which was $39.5 billion, would then become the primary source of funding.

$39.5 billion amounts to less than 22% of the total spent on research.

As with any other enormous legislative package, unintended consequences are the norm rather than the exception. In this case, Medicare for All could lead to the loss of effective antibiotics for these highly virulent strains and the undoing of decades of medical progress.

The entire American left—the mainstream media, the environmentalist movement, and Democratic politicians in particular—are celebrating the involvement of teenagers and even younger children in protesting the world’s “inaction” with regard to global warming.

And not just the American left, of course. The left throughout the world is celebrating. A 16-year-old Swedish girl whose contempt for adults is breathtaking is an international hero. Congressional Democrats invited Greta Thunberg to testify in Congress, and the United Nations likewise invited her.

The mayor and City Council of New York City further politicized their city’s public schools by allowing students to skip school to actively participate in a global warming protest.

The message of young climate change activists is: “You adults aren’t doing your job. As a result, we have no future.” As a sympathetic reporter—are there any non-sympathetic reporters?—for The Los Angeles Times put it, “Teens are still waiting for a sign that their elders get it.”

The Times’ coverage is typical. It reported: “Underneath the activism lies a simple truth: Young people are incredibly scared about climate change. They see it as a profound injustice and an existential threat to their generation and those that will follow ….

“‘They do worry, and they worry kind of a lot,’ said Maria Ojala, an environmental psychologist at Orebro University in Sweden. …

“Arielle Martinez Cohen”—an 18-year-old Los Angeles activist with the youth climate group Zero Hour—”remembers reading a report from an Australian think tank that warned the human species could face extinction by 2050 if society doesn’t get its act together.

“‘I almost imagine, like, an apocalypse-type thing happening,’ Arielle said.

“Many young people say they can’t fathom bringing kids of their own into the world….

“‘It’s not ethical. It’s literally a burning house, Lana said.

“‘That’s something that’s not realistic,’ agreed her twin sister, Yena.

“And how can they even think about college or contemplate their careers when faced with so much uncertainty?

“‘It’s something I feel every single day,’ Yena said. ‘I work really hard at school and I do all these things, and I’m like, “What am I working for? Do I have a future?”

It is critical to remember that hysterias—such as Russian collusion with the Trump campaign, “endemic and systemic racism in America,” the heterosexual AIDS “crisis” in America, and the “rape culture” on American college campuses—are to the left what oxygen is to biological life. No oxygen, no life; no hysteria, no left.

Apparently, however, the left-wing hysteria about global warming leading to the virtual extinction of life on Earth has not moved enough adults. Many adults who do not deny that the Earth is getting warmer—such as Danish writer and environmentalist thinker Bjorn Lomborg—do deny that the threat is “existential” and do believe that the left’s solutions, such as the Green New Deal, will damage the world far more than will carbon emissions.

Proof that the left is hysterical is its unwillingness to promote nuclear power—a completely clean, non-fossil fuel-based source of power. It provides France with 70% of its energy. Anyone who really believes life on Earth is endangered would grasp at the nuclear power lifeboat.

That they do not proves what many of us have believed from the beginning: The “existential threat” scenario is another left-wing falsehood used to whip up hysteria that will lead to the left’s control of the economy and society.

And that takes us back to the children: If you can’t sell your hysteria to adults, try kids. And that is what the left has done. After all, no one is as malleable or as easily indoctrinated as children.

Consider this: If the left didn’t tell them the world is going to end, they wouldn’t worry about it. They’d be enjoying their young lives, maybe even learning to appreciate that they live in the freest country at the most prosperous time in human history. Instead, thanks to leftists (who are children in adult bodies), they live in their grip of “existential eco-anxiety.”

This is but one more way in which the left abuses children (along with telling them they are neither boys nor girls but whatever they later choose to be; teaching them contempt for their country; and depriving them of the greatest source of morality, meaning, community, and happiness—any of the Judeo-Christian religions).

It’s depressing, and it’s frightening.

The scariest movies are those featuring brainwashed children. This horror show is happening in real life.

We Went to the DC Climate Protest. Here Are 5 Things We Saw.

Protesters young and old descended Monday on Washington to call for immediate action on climate change, stopping rush-hour traffic and taking over city parks.

Environmental activists designed the event, called “Shut Down D.C.” or #ShutDownDC, to disrupt morning commutes for government workers and bring attention to their cause.

While world leaders attended the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York—President Donald Trump dropped by the gathering—these activists took to the streets of the nation’s capital to dance and shout their way to “climate justice.”

Here are five things that caught The Daily Signal’s eye as we walked and talked with some of the protesters in Washington:

1. Activists sought attention by bringing traffic to a standstill.

As the name suggests, #ShutDownDC protesters strategically blocked the streets throughout town. Some held banners that stretched across an entire road; others used more creative methods to make sure no one missed their demonstration.

One group, called Extinction Rebellion, parked a massive pink yacht across a busy intersection, illegally interfering with traffic and dancing in the street until police arrived to tow the obstruction away.

Although some drivers honked in support of the activists, the hourslong traffic jam caused plenty of headaches for area residents as they drove to work.

2. They have a sense of urgency for legislative solutions.

The D.C. climate protest featured a wide array of groups calling for everything from the Green New Deal to Trump’s impeachment, but one message was clear: They want action now.  Protesters used blaring music and bullhorns to shout slogans demanding that politicians do something.

Others warned of impending doom within a dozen years if something isn’t done immediately to curb global warming.

3. The protest had a 1960s vibe.

When the march of banner-waving protesters arrived at Farragut Square, they set up speakers for a DJ who provided dubstep music with a pulsing beat.  The mildly psychedelic combination of individuals standing by in shining silver costumes as a 24-year-old D.C. woman danced barefoot on the grass in a simple brown dress felt like a step back in time.

Rhetorical hippie-isms added to the charm.

“We’re coming here to declare a climate emergency,” Northern Virginia resident Nick Brana, 30, told The Daily Signal. “We’re taking the streets, because everything we’ve tried to do by democratic means has failed. We’ve tried voting, we’ve tried protesting, we’ve tried the phone calls, meetings with elected officials. None of it has worked.”

“Underprivileged people feel the consequences of climate change all the time,” Brana added. “The difference is that this time, we’re here on K Street [and] the Capitol building is right over there, so we’re impacting the corporations, the politicians who are responsible for it now. That’s the difference.”

A touch of anger added a little spice to the event.

Person after person refused to speak with reporters from The Daily Signal, which is the multimedia news organization of The Heritage Foundation. One emailed The Daily Signal to withdraw her consent to be quoted.

4. Participants drew inspiration from the Hong Kong protests.

Several groups imitated the use of umbrellas as a rebel symbol that was made famous by the mounting pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

Calling themselves “climate rebels,” the D.C. protesters spray-painted green hourglass symbols on their umbrellas by way of emulating the strategies of the Hong Kong protesters who last month clogged an airport.

5. This was a multigenerational crowd.

Young marchers proudly carried homemade signs and banners that served not only to spread the message of the climate protest but also to block streets.

Although most attendees appeared to be under 30, many older people also turned out.  Of those with whom The Daily Signal spoke, 68-year-old Larry Spoon, of Ashland, Ohio, was the oldest.

“I flew in from Ohio to be here, I just wanted to do something about the situation,” Spoon said. “I’ve got a flight back to Ohio tomorrow. I’m gonna be here for an hour today to see what happens.”

Emma Myers, 21, a student at George Washington University, said she wanted the protest to rouse support for the Green New Deal touted by liberals in Congress.

“We’re looking for the Green New Deal, as it will reduce carbon emissions and that is our goal overall,” Myers said. “We all made our own banners because we all have our own reasons for being out here today.”

The Smearing of Brett Kavanaugh Is an Attack on the Supreme Court

In the end, the Democrats’ smearing of Brett Kavanaugh is about delegitimizing the Supreme Court—the only institution that will inhibit the progressive agenda no matter who wins elections.

In the mind of Democrats, conservative justices aren’t merely wrong; they’re nefarious, racist, and extremist. So it’s not surprising that virtually any smear against Kavanaugh is rationalized.

In this world, the accused, rather than the accuser, bears the “burden of proof.” In this world, hucksters like Michael Avenatti are turned into experts, and major news outlets will eagerly repeat and spread slander as news.

Which is what happened last week when The New York Times ran an excerpt from a new book, “The Education of Brett Kavanaugh,” in which reporters Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly not only rehashed allegations against Kavanaugh, but claimed that he’d been in another drunken incident in his college days.

The Media Reboots Its Crusade Against Kavanaugh

As it turned out, the reporters had somehow failed to mention that the alleged victim had declined to be interviewed because she didn’t recall the incident.

Whether dispositive or not, it seems like a noteworthy detail to skip in an excerpt accusing a Supreme Court justice of inappropriate sexual conduct.

In any event, the Times, caught in a blatantly unprofessional act, was forced to add an editor’s note that debunked the most newsworthy aspect of its own article. It was just another in an interminable series of “mistakes” by supposedly nonpartisan journalists that happen to skew in the same exact partisan direction while creating the same useful perceptions.

Headlines about “new allegations” were blasted across the media landscape—even after the correction. The important thing to them is that journalists can keep framing Kavanaugh as a problematic justice and Democrats can keep using the word “illegitimate” to describe his seat.

Although Kavanaugh was nominated and confirmed in the same constitutionally sound manner that every Supreme Court justice in history had been nominated and confirmed, Democratic presidential hopefuls are calling for Kavanaugh’s impeachment.

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., who not long ago put unsubstantiated gang rape charges against Kavanaugh in the congressional record, claims he underwent “a sham process and his place on the court is an insult to the pursuit of truth and justice.”

Jeffrey Toobin, CNN’s “Chief Legal Analyst,” noted that “40% of the Republican appointees to the Supreme Court have been credibly accused of sexual misconduct.”

This is the point of the whole enterprise, right? The implication is, “Why would any American respect the court’s rulings when it’s packed with sexual abusers?”

Now, I hate to break the news to Toobin, but notwithstanding the hagiography created by the cultural and political left, the notion that Anita Hill was a “credible” accuser is, to say the least, highly debatable.

To this day, not a single person—and Clarence Thomas had scores of subordinates working for him during his years in government, before and after his confirmation—came forward to substantiate that the judge had ever acted in the ways Hill described.

On the other hand, 12 former female colleagues of both Thomas and Hill signed an affidavit supporting him. Not one person who worked with both came forward to vouch for Hill.

And, as with Christine Blasey Ford, the FBI investigated Hill’s claims and couldn’t find any evidence to back her accusation.

After the hearings, agents sent additional affidavits to the Senate accusing Hill of misleading the public by skipping important portions of her story and offering public testimony that contradicted what she had told law enforcement officials.

Yet, in the liberal imagination, Thomas is guilty, the same way Kavanaugh will be forever considered guilty, although none of Ford’s contentions have been corroborated or substantiated.

Not a single person at the mysterious party where Kavanaugh supposedly forced himself on her have come forward. Not even her lifelong friend, Leland Keyser, who was pressured by friends and political forces to accuse Kavanaugh, remembers any such incident.

“It just didn’t make any sense,” Keyser told The New York Times reporters about Ford’s allegations. “I don’t have any confidence in the story,” she added.

Deborah Ramirez, another accuser, hadn’t even been able to recall supposedly swatting away Kavanaugh’s penis at college party until New Yorker reporters asked her about it—well, after “carefully assessing her memories” and landing on the correct answer.

Now the Times reports that other third parties—Ramirez’s mother, for instance—remember hearing about the incident, as well.

I assume many more people will have miraculous recall as we move forward. What there won’t be are any consequences for journalistic malpractice.

And Democrats, who have no interest in living with the constraints of the Constitution, probably see little downside in destroying trust in the courts even as they weaponize a serious issue for partisan gain.
