Jimmy Carter Lied About Chavez Count
Study shows Hugo Chavez rigged elections
Clarice FeldmanThe New York Sun reports a blue ribbon study which shows that Hugo Chavez, who has assumed dictatorial powers in Venezuela, rigged both his election "landslides."
Hugo Chavez may have lost both the recall referendum in 2004 and the December 2006 presidential election, according to studies conducted by a distinguished multidisciplinary team in Caracas, Venezuela.
The team includes the rector of Universidad Simon Bolivar, Frederick Malpica, and a former rector of the National Electoral Council, Alfredo Weil.
Astonishing as it may seem to Americans who believe the contention by Mr. Chavez that he won both elections by a landslide - 58% to 42% in the recall and 61% to 39% in the presidential election - the studies show that since 2003, Mr. Chavez has added 4.4 million favorable names to the voter list and "migrated" 2.6 million unfavorable voters to places where it was difficult or impossible for them to vote.
How can this be?
Jimmy Carter certified both of them

Jimmy Carter Still Loves Terrorists
NYT's Kristof burnishes Jimmy Carter's image
Ed Lasky
Truly breathtaking! In an op-ed ($ link) today, Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times praises Jimmy Carter. Ex-president Carter has been subject to rounds of criticism for the fabrications, plagiarism and outright bias and mendacity in his recent book about Israel and the Palestinians.
Former associates have been abandoning him in droves; his Carter Center has been found to be a conduit for Arab dictators' money; even Democratic leaders have distanced themselves from him.
Who goes to bat to burnish his image-none other than Nicholas Kristof? The very same New York Times columnist who defended University of South Florida professor Sami Al-Arian: one of the money men who funneled money to the terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (which group was found responsible for the death of many people-including American teenager Alisa Flatow.
Praise from Kristof is nothing with which I would want to be associated

House Vote Message: We Surrender
What the real message is to the president and the world is that there are 246 members of the American House of Representatives that are cowards and they believe that the best thing for America to win the day is surrender - turn tail and run - American has nothing worth fighting for.
What this means is our leaders believe it is better to convert to Islam then to have a free nation - all of those that gave their lives in years past to keep a America free mean nothing.
What we are seeing is the liberal Democrats and 17 Republicans pissing on the graves of our war dead and, what's worse, they see nothing wrong in this -
Again, I have said this many times, these people are not Americans - they do not represent me or millions like me that believes we are at war - and that the 3000 that died on 9/11 and the 3000 that have given their lives for America in the middle east will not have died in vain!
It is imperative that we always remember that these 246 monster in our government are not part of America that our forefathers died for when establishing this nation. They are godless and moral less socialists that seek to destroy this country as we know it. They will do their best to separate the good people of America from their honor and pride in America.
When this happens, that is if we let them do this, we will have nothing left of 250 years of hard fought freedom for our offspring. What we will have is a huge liberal, Marxist government that will tell us what is best in our lives. If we don't like what they say, we will find that it's too late to change our minds as we are forced to our knees and shot in the back of the head. Read Jimmy Carter's book - he loves communists.
This is the legacy that the liberals have in mind for future generations. The vote in the House goes a long way to prove my point. It is imperative that America fail. We must lose in Iraq, like Vietnam, to show the world that we are really bad people and that we will feel bad when millions die because we started this whole mess in the first place and then pulled out before the job was done, just like Vietnam.
It was Democrats that murdered 5 million people there when they cut the funding for the war in Asia, and now they will do the say in the middle east. America will not recover its integrity this time around. The military will be destroyed by members of congress. This is also on the agenda of the Democrats. The liberals can't bring a nation to heel if the military is all volunteer - they won't kill fellow Americans for the liberal puppet masters.
The liberal Democrats are not Americans - they come from some other place, some place that is dark and cold.

Why Do So Many People Hate America?
In a June 2006 article, Dennis Prager wrote,
"People who don't confront the greatest evils will confront far lesser ones...One day, our grandchildren may ask us what we did when Islamic fascism threatened the free world. Some of us will say we were preoccupied with fighting that threat wherever possible; others will be able to say they fought carbon dioxide emissions. One of us will look bad."

Pelosi - Murtha Plan: "Slow-Bleed" America
Their new plan to slowly cut the throats of our service men and women, while proclaiming they support the troops, gives new meaning to the saying "death by a thousand cuts". This is right from the liberal play book.
The American people have to ask themselves how people like Nancy Pelosi and John Murtha can stand up in congress and proclaim themselves American citizens and want only the best for this country, all the while stabbing her in the back and turning the knife for maximum effect.
The following article will lay it out for you - I can't believe they have enjoyed the security and prosperity of this country and yet work to destroy the very hand that feeds them. But, again, they are, after all, liberals and Democrats - that should be explanation enough.
The Democrat strategy on Iraq is finally clear.
We've known all along that they want to cut and run before the job is done. But they've been afraid to confront President Bush directly. Today, Democrat Rep. John Murtha let slip what he and Nancy Pelosi really intend to do, and it is genuinely frightening.
They call it their 'slow-bleed' plan. Instead of supporting the troops in Iraq, or simply bringing them home, the Democrats intend to gradually make it harder and harder for them to do their jobs. They will introduce riders onto bills to prevent certain units from deploying. They will try to limit the President's constitutional power to determine the length and number of deployments. They will attempt to keep the Pentagon from replacing troops who rotate out of Iraq. They may even try to limit how our troops operate by, for example, prohibiting our armed forces from creating and operating bases in Iraq.
'Slow-bleed' is exactly the right name for this incredibly irresponsible and dangerous strategy. Cutting and running is bad enough. But the Murtha-Pelosi 'slow-bleed' plan is far worse. It is a cynical and dangerous erosion of our ability to fight the terrorists while we still have men and women on the ground in Iraq. It will put their lives in far greater danger, as resources slowly dry up. How can our troops operate without bases? How can they fight without backup?
'Slow-bleed' cannot become law. Luckily, we have an opportunity to stop it. The Murtha plan depended on stealth. Now, however, the press has broken the story. And now we can act.
Pelosi is a Socialist Activist
Her main goal,so it seems, is to make sure that there will be no opposition to what ever she wants to do in bring America to her knees. She wants to build a new form of government that will control all of our lives in every aspect. Freedom, as we know it today, will be a thing of the past -
Pelosi is a Marxist socialist and her vision for America is the classic agenda of controlling the population to meet the needs of the few - i.e. the agenda of the past and failed Soviet Union. The liberal left Democrats will, if the can, bring us to the same conclusion.
The article below is just the beginning -
Speaker Of The House Hires A George Soros Activist
By Rev. Louis P. SheldonChairman, Traditional Values Coalition
February 13, 2007 - Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has recently hired Joseph Onek to be her Senior Counsel. Most people have never heard of Onek before, but he was an operative in both the Carter and Clinton White House.
While in the Carter Adminstration, Onek served as Deputy Counsel to Jimmy Carter. In the Clinton Administration, Onek was a deputy Associate Attorney General and was the Rule of Law Coordinator with the State Department.
Onek also served as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice William Brennan and served as an Assistant Counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
But his more recent work as a Senior Policy Analyst with the Open Society Institute (OSI) should be of deep concern to all Americans. The Open Society Institute is a creation of billionaire atheist George Soros. This virulently anti-Christian man operates what some have called a Âshadow government in America  a network of groups and radical individuals who wish to control AmericaÂs social and national security policies.
Discoverthenetworks.org monitors the web of leftist organizations that seek to rule our nation.
It describes this shadow government as being Âconceived and organized principally by George Soros, Hillary Clinton and Harold McEwan Ickes -- all identified with the Democratic Party left.Â
The OSI funnels millions of dollars into various leftist causes, including euthanasia, open borders, abortion, homosexual activism, marijuana legalization, the undermining of our nationÂs war on terrorism and other neo-Marxist visions of social justice. A list of OSIÂs grantees (posted on the Âdiscoverthenetworks.org web site) reads like a phone book of every anti-American, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual group in America.
Soros has a warped vision for America, and heÂs pouring millions of dollars into public policy organizations that will push his agendas. He is also pouring money into elections. He spent $26 million to defeat Bush in 2004.
Today, Soros has decided that Senator Barack Obama should be our next president and has anointed him for that purpose. He will provide Obama with funding plus whatever publicity he can generate for the senator through his various front groups.
Soros either funds or operates a whole range of such organizations, but the Open Society Institute is his flagship organization.
The current president of OSI is Aryeh Neier, who as director of the socialist League for Industrial Democracy, founded the radical Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) back in 1959. OSIÂs Director of U.S. Advocacy is Morton Halperin, a man who has devoted his entire life to subverting AmericaÂs intelligence efforts to fight domestic and international threats. Halperin is a former Carter and Clinton official who has consistently attacked the work of the CIA.
George Soros must be pleased to have one of his operatives a heartbeat away from Speaker of the House Pelosi. Did Onek get his job with Pelosi through the influence of Soros? Was Onek placed in her office to direct policy decisions? What role does Onek play in Soros shadow government?
But, more to the point: What role does Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi play in George Soros shadow government? Americans deserve answers to these questions.

Obama Slip Shows Who Obama Is
A politician's mouth is his or her active participation in a society. We have a choice, we can believe what he says he will do or we will not believe what he says or what he actually does as being a credible accounting of his true moral agenda.
With only two years of experience in the federal government, why would anyone believe he is capable of being our president? It's crazy.
Obama says it was a slip of the tongue - maybe, but what the slip actually represented was his true feelings that he was trying to hide.
He supports the troops but not the war -
He supports the troops but not the military -
He supports the troops but not America -
He supports the troops but not freedom or democracy.
He supports everything America isn't - he supports the agenda of the liberal Democrats.

Southern States Say NO to Fence
Double-Layer Minuteman Fence Gauntlet Cuts Illegal Crossings
Virtual Fence Cameras and additional Border Patrol will Keep Illegal Commerce Growing in Texas Border Towns
According to an interview with Fox News, the Mayor of El Paso and seven other Texas border city Mayors do not want a federal border fence to be built. Instead, they want the funds to be used to install cameras and hire additional Border Patrol Agents.
Fences keep illegal aliens from crossing the border! When asked why he did not want a fence, the El Paso Mayor said he was concerned that a fence would hurt business and reduce commerce in border towns.
Fences do work!

Jimmy Carter Caught in Lies
Jimmy lusts after that kind of power and why not - he is, after all, a Democrat.
Jimmy Carter's feelings are hurtJames Lewis ( a hi-lite from American Thinker )
Group hug!!! Jimmy's hurtin'. No, he didn't fall and scrape his knee. Former US President Jimmy Carter, Nobel Peace Prize Winner for Bringing Peace to the Middle East, and all-around global messenger of sweetness and light, has been called a bigot. Or so he claims.
"I've been hurt and so has my family by some of the reaction," Carter said. "This is the first time that I've ever been called a liar and a bigot and an anti-Semite and a coward and a plagiarist. This has hurt me."
Let no one say we are insensitive to Mr. Carter's feelings. But Jimmy's pain may fade into triviality next to the hurt feelings of Israelis and Palestinians --- whose loved ones have been killed or maimed by the actions of Yasser
Arafat, the terror boss for whom Mr. Carter served as secret volunteer speech writer. Or by the million or so Iraqis and Iranians who died horrifically in the war staged by Saddam Hussein against Ayatollah Khomeini, after
Mr. Carter enabled Khomeini to start the first Islamofascist regime in the Middle East in 1979.
Or by the thousands of Iranians who have been tortured by Khomeiniac Mullahs. Or by the millions of Israelis whose lives are being threatened every single day by the new aspiring tyrant of Tehran, the mystical fanatic Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Or by all the other tyrants and killers who have been enabled by Mr. Carter's unbelievable naivete --- or malevolence. - - - ( story continues -)
Nancy Pelosi: Liberalism at it's Best
We all know what is happening - the liberals finally have the power, the power that has been denied them for seven years and now they have they are going to use it and abuse it. Money is no object - the stupid tax payers will foot the bill as they always have and always will.
But for the speaker of the house to demand a huge airplane to be put at her disposal is a bit much even for a liberal socialist like her. She says it's so when she wants or needs to get back to California to rip someone off or cut a deal with some off-shore canneries for her husbands business, she can do what needs to be done and then get back to Washington to control the flow of money into Democrat pockets and smile while she continues to screw America to the wall.
I guess the best thing for now is to do is nothing - these people will show us who they are and what they are about - Nancy is just the first to step up to the plate and take a good swing at the ball. There are many that will follow in her foot steps. Their greed and lust for power will tip their hand.

Nancy Pelosi Wants Bedroom on her Jet
Critics charge that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is abusing the perks of power by asking for a jumbo military jet with sleeping accommodations for her flights across the country.
After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Pentagon agreed to provide the speaker, who is second in the line of presidential succession, with a military plane for added security during trips back home.
Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican, flew in a small commuter-sized Air Force jet.
Pelosi wants a larger aircraft that can fly to her San Francisco district without stopping to refuel.
Some sources are claiming that Pelosi demanded access to the C-32, which seats 45 and has a stateroom for the primary passenger, a conference facility, an entertainment system and three convertible beds.
But the Los Angeles Times reports that the military passenger plane that can make a cross-country flight in any weather and also provide the communications needed to stay in contact with the White House is the C-40, which is described by the Air Force as an "office in the sky.”
Derived from the Boeing 737-700C, it can seat up to 120 passengers and has beds and two galleys.
Pelosi’s spokesman Brendan Daly acknowledged that the speaker has asked if family and friends can fly with her on business travel.
Some Republicans are raising a stink over Pelosi’s moves. "Flying Lincoln bedroom,” Minority Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri said in story appearing in the Washington Times.
"Pelosi One” said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry of North Carolina in the same article.
But spokesman Daly said the flap was "ridiculous.”
And Pelosi herself told the media on Wednesday that the request for the plane "has nothing to do with family and friends and everything to do with security. It’s a question of distance.”
She also said that she only wanted - as a female speaker of the house - what any male speaker of the house has had. But most people do not fly cross-country with a bedroom.
Curiously, Pelosi has suggested that the Bush administration was behind the flap, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"The ... misrepresentation could [only] be coming from the administration, and one would only have to wonder why,” Pelosi said, even though White House Press Secretary Tony Snow says the speaker is not asking for anything unreasonable, that the whole affair is much ado about nothing, and that the military and the speaker are working things out.
According to the Air Force, at least 21 people can request the use of the C-40s, and there are only four of the aircraft available. Potential users include the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Cabinet secretaries. The planes are also used to fly congressional delegations to military theaters.
A senior Defense Department official said the aircraft Pelosi would be offered could sometimes include the larger plane.

Free Speech for Us but NOT You: Liberal Fascists
This article points some of the problems that a free society faces when the population of a country is more concerned with a secure life style rather than a secure future for the next generations. This attack by fascists is just the tip of the iceberg that is the socialist anarchy in our universities. It is the same anarchy that the liberal Democrats use as their agenda for greater America and now they control the government.
This is the second time this has happened in the last six months. The first one was at Columbia. Will it happen again? Of course, and the reason it will happen again and again is because no one cares enough about the very basic freedoms that we all take for granted. 'Someone else with take of it, I'm sure. I have my career to think of - '
After all, this is America - what can happen here that is so bad? We have our rights!
A fool's song sung by idiots.
UCLA CANCELS MINUTEMAN DEBATE; INTIMIDATED BY ANARCHISTS
Minute Man Civil Defense Corp. News letter -
The University of California Los Angeles rescinded an invitation yesterday issued to Carl Braun, California State Director for the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, to a debate scheduled for this evening with Dr. Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute regarding border security. Citing “security risks,” the school administration canceled the event, which has been planned for months. Sponsored by ClubLogic.org and the Ayn Rand Institute, the debate was to have been an evening event on the UCLA campus.
“Apparently the open border advocates will infringe upon our constitutional rights to free speech because they are worried that we will educate college students about the criminal elements that enter our country illegally while they simultaneously threaten the personal security of our members,” stated Chris Simcox, founder and President of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. “The UCLA administration should ensure that free speech and honest debate regarding such an important topic is not void from their campus.”
The University Police and Minuteman leadership personnel were notified Monday morning of threats appearing on an anarchist website. The site was one of several calling for protests stating, "Admission is free, so let’s do what they did at Columbia and shut it down! Hate speech is not free speech. No hate speech at UCLA."
The postings gave instructions to protestors on how to defeat police efforts to control the mobs if things got out of control: "Remember UCPD officers gleefully use Tazer guns, so wear heavy clothing with a thick plastic raincoat over it. Also Tazer prongs are 2 inches long and can be short circuited by a(nd)[sic] correctly placed insulated metal object or wire mesh. Plan ahead and avoid injury.”
The University Administration cited budgetary reasons for not wanting to have to pay police overtime, but private sources said there was quite a controversy amongst school administrators between those that wanted the event to proceed and those that wanted to capitulate to the leftist groups’ demands that the CA Minuteman leader Mr. Braun be prevented from sharing his views on the topics under debate.
Billed as a civil discourse on the rationale of borders, Dr. Brook, a noted "open borders advocate" and Mr. Braun, a proponent of strong border security, were prepared to conduct a philosophical debate on the subject for the students and faculty. Instead, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) on campus planned to disrupt the free exchange of ideas.
Citing the school authorities’ security concerns, Arthur Lechtholz-Zey, Chief Executive Officer of Club Logic, notified Mr. Braun at 6pm Monday evening (Pacific Time) that the event was cancelled.
"Arthur was quite distressed at the last minute cancellation by the University Administration," stated Carl Braun, California State Director for the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and one of the scheduled speakers.
"We both felt that freedom of speech was once again trumped by anarchists and students threatening to disrupt the event in a Columbia University-type protest."

Libby Trail Falling Apart on Liberals
Fitzgerald is shameless and totally without moral fiber, a good Democrat.
Bond bombs Clarice Feldman
FBI Agent Bond admits that she mistestified when she said that Libby told her Rove told Novak. In fact he said Rove said Novak told him about Plame. Tom Maguire wraps up the testimony of Bond, who proved to be yet another weak prosecution witness . ( my hilite )
The jury has now started listening to the tapes of Libby's testimony before the grand jury. You can read the transcript of 20 pp of the grand jury testimony previously put into evidence by the prosecution here.
A blogger in the media room reports that in the tapes of the grand jury, Libby sounds careful and refers to his notes Indeed, he sounds infinitely more punctilious that all the prosecution witnesses who've testified in the trial.)
Azaghal explains why to that same blogger Fitzgerald sounds so confident on the tapes:
1. He is the "functional equivalent of the Attorney General," and so is expressly answerable to no one at DoJ.
2. As such he can exempt himself from DoJ guidelines that he finds irksome.
3. He has his target under oath before the GJ.
4. The target thinks this investigation is to uncover a substantive crime.
5. The target thinks he is innocent and has nothing to fear from the truth.
6. The target has been told by the President of the United States that he must not assert his rights under the Constitution of the United States.
7. Fitz knows that the FBI can be relied upon to write up their interviews in a prejudicial manner.
8. Fitz knows the target can't see those interviews until he's indicted.
9. Fitz knows the GJ will hear testimony from the FBI that the target won't hear and so won't be able to respond to.
10. Fitz knows he's after process violations and is simply trying to get Libby to say something that can be twisted when Fitz speaks to the GJ--without the target present to rebut.
I don't know what more anyone could have expected when this extra-statutory and unconstitutional appointment was made, and those on the right who claim to believe in a nation under law and yet kept silent about this special appointment out of a misplaced faith in the aggressive and "creative"Fitzgerald can now see what they helped put into place.
Savings Rate in America Nonexistent
This article doesn't cover some the less heralded aspects of saving habits that accounts for a large part of the new saving system in the work place.
It doesn't take into account 401K's or 403B's that are deducted from the workers paycheck before taxes. There is also a large number of people that are involved in the stock market and IRA's, insurance policies, annuities and other programs that do not come to light when deciding who saves what and where.
Only time will tell if the present generation, Boomer, will have the will to at least make an attempt at savings now that retirement is on the horizon - too late for many but maybe their is hope for some.
Following, in the article, is more good news on the economy - this is not new information -
Personal Savings in 2006 Dropped to 74-Year Low
MoneyNews Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007
WASHINGTON -- People once again spent everything they made and then some last year, pushing the personal savings rate to the lowest level since the Great Depression more than seven decades ago.
The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the savings rate for all of 2006 was a negative 1 percent, meaning that not only did people spend all the money they earned but they also dipped into savings or increased borrowing to finance purchases.
The 2006 figure was lower than a negative 0.4 percent in 2005 and was the poorest showing since a negative 1.5 percent savings rate in 1933 during the Great Depression.
For December, consumer spending rose a solid 0.7 percent, the best showing in five months, while incomes rose by 0.5 percent, both figures matching Wall Street expectations.
In other news, the Labor Department reported that the number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits dropped by 20,000 last week to 307,000.
That improvement pushed the four-week average for claims to the lowest level in a year, indicating that the labor market remains healthy.
Also the deficit is cut in half four years ahead of schedule due to revenue income that is 24% ahead of two years ago, wages are up over 4% and the over all GDP for the forth quarter is at 3.5%, that is ahead of anyone's expectations - Of course you wouldn't hear this from the Democrats.
The Democrats Bail on Hillary - Why?
The news is mostly about the leading big wigs, the Clinton hacks especially, of the Democrat Party that are taking a hike on Hillary, and with good reason, she is not fit to govern. Like Dick Cheney said last week in an interview, Hillary can't be president because she is a Democrat.
Is it possible that the Democrat party leaders, in their heart of hearts, believe the same thing, she is just too much Democrat for the general public to swallow. Is that why they are falling over themselves every time Obama comes on the scene? He doesn't have the 'mark of cane' on him like Hillary does -
But don't be fooled about who Obama actually is. In reality, Obama is pretty much cut from the same cloth as Hillary, he just doesn't have the baggage that Hillary does. The Democrat party believes they can fool the public into thinking he is 'the next coming' for America.
With not too much trouble digging into his back ground, it becomes clear he is just as left of center as any other main stream Democrat candidate, if not further so, as he voted with the Democrat party agenda every time in his vast history in the senate, all two years of it.
In any event, the Democrats don't have a gauge to use when deciding on who will be their leader except who will be able to fool the public the best. It's clear, for now, it isn't Hillary

Clintonistas Abandoning Hillary
A number of Clinton administration officials have shunned Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign for the presidency and are instead working with her rivals for the Democratic nomination in 2008.
Among the highest-ranking defectors, former Commerce Secretary William Daley is backing Sen. Barack Obama; top Clinton political aide Douglas Sosnik is advising Sen. Christopher Dodd; and Al Gore’s former Chief of Staff Ronald Klain is in the camp of Sen. Joe Biden, The New York Sun reports.
Former White House counsel Abner Mikva is also backing Obama.
“I knew Obama before I went to the White House,” Mikva told the Sun. “I have a high regard for Hillary. I think Barack will be a better candidate and has a better chance of winning.”
Other former Clinton administration officials in the Obama camp include Michael Froman, a former Treasury Department official; White House congressional liaison Broderick Johnson; former Treasury aide Karen Kornbluh; ex-White House health policy aide Devorah Adler; Anthony Lake, who was a national security adviser to President Clinton; and Susan Rice, a former White House adviser on Africa policy.
Ex-Clinton administration figures who are working for John Edwards’ presidential campaign include Clinton speechwriter Jonathan Prince, White House spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri, and National Security Council staffer Miles Lackey.
Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack also has some former Clinton talent on his staff.
Hillary spokesman Howard Wolfson downplayed the loss of former Clinton loyalists, telling the Sun: “We are very pleased with the overwhelming support and encouragement Sen. Clinton has gotten from administration alums.”
Asked about the defectors, Wolfson said: “All good folks and we wish them well.”

Franks Rich Explains Media Bias

Frank Rich: TV News Is ‘Fictionalized’
Today’s TV news programs have more in common with television miniseries than with factual reporting, says New York Times op-ed columnist Frank Rich.
“What used to be truth has been replaced by something that looks like reality, but is often fictionalized,” Rich — a former theater critic — told a gathering at The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Fla., on Jan. 30.
It all began with the highly successful 1977 miniseries “Roots,” which romanticized history, and that set the example for later distortions of the facts by CNN when it covered the first Gulf War as 24/7 entertainment, according to Rich, who called that coverage a “mediathon.”
“It made the Gulf War the first war in American history with its own theme music, its own logo, and a cast of, if not thousands, hundreds,” Rich said in remarks reported by the Palm Beach Daily News.
Because of a news blackout, actual journalism was scarce, and instead “experts came on and said whatever they wanted based on idle speculation and government officials came on and said whatever they wanted us to hear,” Rich told the gathering.
Other mediathons have included the O.J. Simpson trial and the deaths of Princess Diana and John Kennedy Jr., according to Rich.
The evolution of news into entertainment — driven largely by the profit motive — and the distortion of facts to serve political ends “is not a Republican problem,” Rich added. “It’s a cultural problem.
The Democrats are just as eager to take this entertainment-over-reality approach and exploit it.”

Air America Bankrupt : Al Franken Runs For Senate
No, really - the media will sound the alarm that all things are a total mess and what is needed now is a good Democrat to put it right - more taxes and more huge programs that will solve everyone's problems except one: who will pay the bill? - That's an easy one, Hillary has the answer, big oil.
She stated today that she wants to take their profits. After all, it's only right that Mobil should be happy to work for nothing. Marx thought it was a good idea, take from the productive and give to the unproductive, why not Hillary or Al Frankin - look what Al did to the Boy's and Girl's Clubs of New York, sucked them dry. It's that 'greater good' thing, remember. Now he wants to fleece the taxpayers.
Comedian Al Franken to Run for Senate
Comedian Al Franken has decided to run for the U.S. Senate from Minnesota in 2008, a senior Democratic official from Minnesota said Wednesday.
Franken told the official, who did not want to be identified because Franken has not made an announcement, that he had decided to run in a recent conversation.
Andy Barr, the political director of Franken's Midwest Values Political Action Committee, declined to comment.
The news was not unexpected. Franken has been calling members of the Minnesota congressional delegation to get their input on a run, and he announced this week that he would be leaving his show on Air America Radio on Feb. 14. He told listeners he would be making a decision on a race soon.
In a statement, Minnesota Republican Party Chairman Ron Carey said he was confident Minnesotans "will reject Franken's divisive, scorched-earth attacks." The state Democratic Party declined to comment.
Should he win the Democratic primary in Minnesota, Franken would take on Republican Norm Coleman, a first-term senator who is among the Democrats' top targets. Coleman declined to comment Wednesday.
Franken, 55, was born in New York City, like Coleman, but grew up in St. Louis Park, a suburb of Minneapolis. He was a performer and writer on television's "Saturday Night Live" before writing best-selling books combining humor and politics.
His PAC raised nearly $1 million last year. Although Franken can't use that money for his Senate campaign, it shows he shouldn't have a problem raising money.
Coleman reported about $1.7 million in his bank account as of Dec. 31.
Franken faces major challenges, said Larry Jacobs, a political science professor at the University of Minnesota. Besides needing to establish himself as a serious candidate, Franken has staked out left-wing policies that make it questionable whether he can win independent voters, Jacobs said.

The Media Lied About Libby - Who Knew?
They never had a case in the first place and now all of the star witnesses are folding like paper bags - and just who are the star witnesses? Reporters - their story is full of holes - that is, they lied under oath - Oh no! - not the professionals -
this is from the American thinker -
Clarice Feldman on the Libby Trial
Thomas Lifson
Our astute Libby Trial correspondent Clarice Feldman has been live blogging the Libby Trial from the media room, and has posted her reflections on yesterday's proceedings at Just One Minute. Clarice's many fans will find her characteristic wit and insight on full display. Here are some highlights:
Wednesday was a good day for the Libby defense. Judy Miller, as the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and the AP's Matt Apuzzo noted was not an all star witness for the prosecution. I don't like ploughing a field that's already been tilled and refer you again to my media bloggers association colleague, Rory O'Connor who has some good thumbnails on the last portion of her testimony (1, 2).
The most amusing witness of the trial was up today, the charming Matt Cooper who with his sloppy notes, shoddy journalism and wry humor brought the old play "Front Page" to life before our eyes. He is the sort of person it would be fun to have dinner with, not the sort of person whose news story should be taken as a bit of serious journalism.
Cooper is one of the prosecution's chief witnesses and surely by now even those who believed in the "Elliott Ness with a law degree" fluff about the prosecutor must be thinking more along the lines of "Get Smart". In a brutally devastating but gentlemanly low key way the defense destroyed a key prosecution witness. The defense showed through an examination of the internal Time emails and documents that the story that brought Matt Cooper into this, "A War on Wilson?" was something concocted out of thin air.
Clarice has long predicted that the media would be the ones in a world of hurt at the end of the trial. So far, her predictions are coming true.
